"U.S. Backs Away From Claim on ‘Imminent’ Soleimani Attack
The secretary of state said the Iranian leader was killed because of past behavior, which contradicts his assertions that the decision to kill Soleimani was based on an imminent attack on Americans.
SECRETARY OF STATE Mike Pompeo on Tuesday offered a convoluted rationale behind President Donald Trump’s decision to order the deadly strike against Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani last week, saying the prolific Quds Force leader’s prior behavior, as well as his planned efforts to continue building terror networks, prompted Trump to decide to kill him.
Pompeo’s statement marks a shift in rhetoric from top administration officials, who have claimed that the contentious drone strike was justified by yet unspecified intelligence that Soleimani had planned a specific attack against Americans, and that only his death would have prevented it.
"If you’re looking for imminence, you need look no further than the days that led up to the strike that was taken against Soleimani," Pompeo said, specifically citing the attack by Iran-backed Iraqi militia Kata’ib Hezbollah in December against a U.S. base near Kirkuk, killing an American contractor."
